Electric cars could ‘overload power grid’ warns French energy firm

No sooner has it launched than the Renault ZOE electric car is being blamed with threatening France’s power grid.

In an article in the Daily Mail today, there is a stark warning from the head of R&D at French power infrastructure firm RTE, that the rising prominence of electric cars on the road could put the country’s already strained electric grid, under increasing pressure.

The warning comes as new, more affordable electric cars launch, including the country’s own, long-awaited Renault ZOE, which hold mass market potential.

Olivier Grabette of RTE, told the paper: “If it’s badly managed, it could prompt power surges, which would cost a lot in peak production, CO2 emissions and would also necessitate the construction of relatively costly infrastructure.
