Consumer Electronics Are Driving Battery Advances

Strategic advising firm Lux Research claims that, although the motivation to develop next-generation battery technology typically comes from the automotive sector, the consumer electronics division is more apt to develop the technology first. This, said Lux research, is due to the need to constantly shrink the size consumer electronic equipment, while not diminishing battery capacity, the ability to hold a charge, or to recharge rapidly.

Lux Research said that automakers are constantly held back in the development of breakthrough technologies due to “stringent safety and lifetime requirements, and long, cautious adoption cycles.” Lux Research predicts that a battery breakthrough will be in solid-state technology. The firm predicts that a breakthrough will occur around 2020, when solid-state begins to challenge lithium ion on all fronts, including costs, energy density and ease of manufacturing.
