Bus crash cause big fire

VALLEJO — Firefighters extinguished a fire that destroyed a crashed passenger bus on Interstate 80, igniting the surrounding eucalyptus trees and sending flames more than 100 feet into the sky. The multiple-alarm fire also burned a nearby fence and apartment complex.

No one, including the bus driver, was injured, but several people were evacuated from the complex.

A tall column of smoke blackened Vallejo skies Sunday about 6 p.m. when a 40-foot passenger crashed on eastbound I-80, just west of the Redwood Street overpass, said firefighters on the scene.

The bus was empty except for the driver, who managed to escape as the vehicle ignited and became engulfed in flames on the right shoulder of the freeway.
