USA: City May Soon See More Charging Stations For Electric Cars

Could the city soon be covered with charging stations for electric cars? The Bloomberg administration is certainly moving in that direction. NY1’s Courtney Gross filed the following report.

At the end of his day working for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, city park inspector Andrew Murin comes back in to charge his electric car. Then, he’s back on the road, cruising in one of the 458 plug-in electric cars the city owns.

“It all works smoothly and efficiently, and it’s a great car for city driving,” Murin said.

It’s a fleet that’s about to expand.

“We’ve made progress with the hybrids, and now, we’re taking that next step,” said Keith Kerman, the city’s chief fleet officer. “A hybrid electric vehicle improves fuel economy, but a plug-in electric vehicle takes fuel out of the equation.”

In his State of the City address last week, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he wants to increase the number of electric cars the city uses, require charging stations for new construction, and make one-third of city’s taxi fleet plug in rather than gas up.
