They’re becoming a more common sight on the streets of major UK cities. And it’s easy to see why; the ecological drawbacks of relying on petrol and diesel powered vehicles have become increasingly well-known over the last few decades, and a greener alternative has been welcomed by many.

However, electric cars are still seen by some as a novelty, and it’s possible that you’ve decided against buying one without really looking into the models available. A government scheme called the Plug-in Car Grant has been set up to help convince people – it offers a grant of up to 25% of the value of a super-low-emission vehicle which appears on the government’s approved list; this is a big tick in favour of these vehicles. Combine that with good value car insurance from a reliable provider, such as The Co-operative, and you could really save a bundle on your car running costs.

Here are five of the top electric cars available on the market – maybe one of them will tempt you into making the big switch from petrol pump to plug-in powered transportation.

Toyota Plug-in Prius
The five-door Prius has a distinctive streamlined look and a well-designed interior to match. All the mod-cons you’d expect in a modern car are joined by some nifty features like Toyota’s own touch-and-go navigation system which provides real-time traffic information, and a reversing camera to help you fit the vehicle into tricky parking spaces.

It also comes with Hill-start assist control, a braking system which makes it easier to stop-and-go on steep inclines.

Renault Fluence Z.E
With its generous interior, the Renault Fluence is definitely a car aimed at families. There’s enough space for all manner of prams, sports equipment, picnic supplies – whatever you need to transport – and an integrated navigation system should mean you don’t get lost on the way to the park.

Renault run their own monthly battery-rental service, so you shouldn’t run out of juice. Breakdown assistance is also included.

Renault Twizy
From Renault’s spacious family model to this, the Twizy, a very compact two-seat vehicle designed for nipping around city streets in heavy traffic and slotting into those precious city-centre parking spaces.

It has an integrated cable for plugging in to domestic UK electric sockets, so you can charge it in your garage, and a surprising 31l of storage space behind the snug seats. What’s not to love?
