Surat to pump $1.35bn into solar city

A plan to build a $1.35bn ‘solar city’ in Surat, West India, has been passed by the committee of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).

According to The Times of India, the INR7,320 crore ($1.35bn) plans were passed on Friday, marking the first concrete step toward making Surat’s first solar city.

The proposal outlines the raising of INR1,952 crore ($390m) through subsidies, which central and state government will need to approve. The project will also require amendments in the building by-laws to increase the usage of solar water systems.

The city intends to reduce electricity usage ten per cent by 2016, and currently meets 30 per cent of its total energy requirements from green sources. Total production through other non-conventional sources could potentially reach 80 per cent by 2016.
