RIT professor wins award to study recycling batteries from electric cars | Democrat and Chronicle |

An assistant Rochester Institute of Technology professor will research how to recycle batteries from electric cars through a grant and award from the National Science Foundation.

Callie Babbitt, who teaches at RIT’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability, will use the $400,000 award over five years to research the environmental effects of reusing, recycling and disposing of lithium-ion batteries after they have been used in electric cars.

According to Babbitt, electric and hybrid cars have been touted as being more environmentally friendly, but less thought has gone into how to manage their power source.

She will begin her research this summer.

“If we don’t take a proactive approach to understand when and in what quantities these batteries might enter the waste stream, then we have the potential for a major waste challenge down the road,” Babbitt said. “There are many unknowns when it comes to understanding the environmentally responsible way to recycle or recover this type of waste.”
