Ottawa’s sustainable development program to fund pilot plant for Canada Lithium

MONTREAL – The federal government is ready to grant up to $6.5 million to Canada Lithium Corp. toward construction of a pilot plant to ascertain if it would be viable to make high-purity lithium metal from the basic lithium carbon produced by the company’s spodumene mine 60 kilometres north of Val d’Or.

The money will come from the government’s Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) program, designed to promote the country’s clean technology industry.

“It fits our strategy aimed at broadening our product line, the core of which will remain lithium carbonate, and at making higher-value downstream products such as lithium hydroxide and lithium metal,” said Peter Secker, CEO of Canada Lithium.

As a component of electric vehicle batteries, lithium remains in strong demand, and the lithium metal technology can reduce total e-vehicle battery costs, analysts said.
