Here’s How to Rent Tesla’s Model S With Just an App

If you want to give the Tesla Model S a spin (and you’re around San Francisco), there’s an app for that.

Getaround, a San Francisco-based car-sharing startup, launched a redesigned iPhone app today — with a pair of Tesla Model S cars added to its fleet to go along with the launch.

The company, often referred to as “Airbnb for cars,” now has more than 10,000 car owners signed up on Getaround.

Here’s how it works: If you own a car, you can list it on Getaround and rent it out to company’s users. You’ll get paid for renting it out, meanwhile, users can find cars and rent them through an App much like Zipcar ZIP -0.05%.

Getaround already has a Tesla Roadster in its fleet — but if you’re dying to test drive the Tesla Model S, you can now rent one for $20 an hour. You can also control the Tesla Model S with your phone, if you feel like it, as Getaround plugs into Tesla’s software through a component called an application programming interface (API).

We caught up with co-founder Jessica Scorpio to find out more about the redesign and what it means. Here’s an edited transcript of the conversation:

Jessica Scorpio: We completely redesigned iPhone app from the ground up. Our priority was to make it easier to use faster and more reliable. In addition, two of our owners are listing their Tesla Model S cars on Getaround… The Model S is such a great car that it’s a nice way to experience the new app.
