February 25, 2013 – When used as cathode material for primary (non-rechargeable) lithium batteries, CFx (fluorinated carbon) material produces higher gravimetric energy density than such lithium battery cathodes as manganese dioxide (MnO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). CFx materials, suited for powering military portable communication devices, are manufactured from carbon black, coke, and graphite forms of carbon, which can be blended to optimize properties for specific applications.

Contour Energy Systems Now Offering CFx as a Cathode Material for Lithium Batteries

Azusa, Calif. – Contour Energy Systems, a cutting-edge battery company that continues to improve and innovate in the portable power world, is proud to announce it is now offering its own CFx material for lithium batteries for sale to battery manufacturers throughout the world.

Contour Energy Systems continues to expand its product line, and is one of only two large-scale manufacturers of CFx in the U.S. Contour has been manufacturing CFx material since 2009 and now has an annual capacity of 9 ton/year.

CFx, or fluorinated carbon, is a cathode material used in some primary (non-rechargeable) lithium batteries.

When used as a cathode material for primary batteries, CFx produces higher gravimetric energy density than most other common lithium battery cathodes including manganese dioxide and sulfur dioxide. This characteristic makes CFx ideal for powering military portable communication devices.

In fact, when compared to lithium sulfur dioxide (Li/SO2) and lithium manganese dioxide (Li/MnO2) batteries, lithium carbon fluoride (Li/CFx) has about twice the gravimetric energy density.

“If a soldier can carry a little less weight, that’s a big deal for them,” said David Wood, the director of business development for Contour Energy Systems. “And the fact that we’re a U.S. company producing this material in the U.S. is important to the military.”
