USA: Young drivers making a statement with electric cars

Houston has taken care of the need for charging stations at many parks and libraries, but the question of where public stations should be placed remains unanswered.

“That is something that will have to be figured out by the marketplace,” said Kevin Douglass, president of the Houston Electric Auto Association.

As more electric cars hit the road, Douglass said, interest in providing charging stations will increase. In Houston, he said, airports and the theater district are likely places where public charging could greatly benefit drivers. Many electric car drivers, he said, limit trips based on how far their car can get them.

“If you have charging at both places, the home and destination, now you really open up those circles,” Douglass said.

And businesses are paying attention. At least one pay lot near Bush Intercontinental Airport offers charging, and Houston Sustainability Director Laura Spanjian said the city wants to bring stations to the airport’s lots.

Drivers are already making the switch, albeit slowly, promoted by eco-friendly cred. In a blog post for the Christian Science Monitor, Anthony Ingram notes young people are choosing cars based on more than performance.
