PGE, ECOtality complete fast-charger installation along I-5

Oregon’s Electric Highway system just got a whole lot more functional.

Portland General Electric announced Thursday it completed its work with ECOtality to install fast charging stations at businesses along Interstate 5 and I-205.

The upshot? Electric vehicle drivers can pull out from Electric Avenue in Portland and drive south all the way to Ashland I-5 with just 20-minute charging stops along the way.

The southern portion of the electrified I-5 highway was announced last March. The effort is part of the West Coast Electric Highway, a tri-state initiative aiming to install charging infrastructure the entire length of the I-5 corridor from British Columbia to the Mexico border.

The newest quick-charge stations were installed as part of a pilot project led by Portland General Electric (NYSE: POR). They are located at a Southeast Portland Burgerville, the Elmer’s restaurant in Woodburn, Clackamas Town Center, Wilsonville Town Center and the Shari’s Restaurant in Keizer.

Through the pilot, which runs until the end of December, PGE is looking for other customers along the highway system interested in hosting a charging station.
