If you’re thinking about getting a new electric car, make yourself a note that Ford has just chopped $2,000 off the base price for a cash-paid, Ford Focus EV (making it $37,995) and is offering up to $10,750 off a 3-year lease as well.

The electric Ford Focus saw dismal sale numbers last year, selling a mere 685 units out of the total 1,627 that were built.

When comparing the numbers of all the other electric vehicles sold in the U.S. last year, Ford’s price slashing is an understandable strategy. Nissan managed to sell around 9,819 Leafs, and last week dropped the price of their new 2013 Leaf EV to $28,800. Ford’s discount plan comes only days after Nissan’s announcement.

The EV Extended-Range Chevrolet Volt moved 23,461 units, while the reigning hybrid king Toyota Prius sold over 126,000 vehicles just last year.

Ford will be marking down prices until April 1, 2013. Not all Focus EVs will qualify, and the lease includes the value of a $7,500 federal tax credit. The Focus EV, Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt all qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit and some states even offer a $2,500 tax credit.
