Detroit auto show: Bob Lutz, Thomas Edison to talk electric vehicles?

DETROIT, MI- Former General Motors Co. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz will participate in what should be a pretty unique press conference during the 2013 North American International Auto Show.

Lutz, a veteran “car guy” and longtime auto industry executive, will have a “ground-breaking life-size hologram conversation” with Thomas Edison during a Monday press conference for Via Motors, an electric vehicle development and manufacturing company founded in 2010.

Lutz is chairman of the Utah-based EV developer, which partnered with GM to electrify larger vehicles.

Via Motors recently released a preview of a video introduction (embedded above) with Edison, who died in 1931, that is expected to play before the “conversation.”

During the press conference, Lutz will unveil Via’s new 800-horsepower, 4-wheel-drive, up to 100 miles per gallon, electric “X-TRUX,” plus an electric Cadillac Escalade-Class SUV that drives like a Chevrolet Volt averaging 100 miles per gallon, according to Via.

At the 2012 Detroit auto show, Lutz unveiled three extended-range electric vehicles — a utility van, pickup truck and sport utility vehicle – for Via.

The 2013 Detroit auto show is expected to feature more than 50 vehicle unveilings, including the highly-anticipated 2014 Chevrolet Corvette.
