A Tale of Two PHEVs at Auto Show

Two very different plug-in hybrid electric cars debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Volkswagen’s CrossBlue SUV is just a concept vehicle at the moment, with no guarantees that it will ever see an assembly line. But VW had one on display in Detroit.

The automaker said the CrossBlue seats seven and can go about 14 miles on a full charge. After that, a diesel engine kicks in to extend the range about 650 additional miles.

On the passenger side, the diesel tank is filled. On the driver’s side, there are two sockets. One is to charge the battery; the other can be used to power other devices. For example, it can power camping lights.

General Motors used the auto show to take the wraps off a car that will, in fact, arrive in showrooms.

The 2014 Cadillac ELR will join the Chevrolet Volt as the second PHEV in GM’s roster.
