USA: Charging station sites announced

Electric vehicle owners will be able to plug in from Gibsons to Egmont after 11 charging stations are installed under a regional plan led by the District of Sechelt.

Prepared by Enerficiency Consulting, the draft Sunshine Coast electric vehicle charging plan was presented to local governments earlier this month.

The plan identifies six new sites on the Coast for level two (240-volt) charging stations: Wheatberries Bakery in Upper Gibsons, the Roberts Creek commercial hub, Trail Bay Mall in Sechelt, IGA in Wilson Creek, IGA in Pender Harbour and Egmont Heritage Centre, which has also applied for funding for a second charging station.

The Gumboot Restaurant was considered for the Roberts Creek charging station, “but turned out not to be viable,” Roberts Creek director Donna Shugar said during the review of the draft plan at the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) infrastructure services committee meeting on Dec. 6.

However, she added, “it looks like there is a strong will of the community and a private business to make it happen in downtown Roberts Creek.”

Sites already approved for 75 per cent provincial funding are the Sechelt and District Public Library, the Sechelt Aquatic Centre, Kinnikinnick Park, the Gibsons and Area Community Centre and the SCRD offices in Wilson Creek.
