Indianapolis to replace entire fleet with electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles

Indianapolis is doing its part to help create a healthy green environment and make the nation more secure. On Wednesday, Indy officials announced plans to be the first major city to replace its entire fleet of vehicles with electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Today, Mayor Greg Ballard signed an executive order mandating Indianapolis to replace its current sedans with electric vehicles, while asking the city to work with the private sector to phase in snow plows, fire trucks and other heavy vehicles running on compressed natural gas. Automakers will also be asked to develop a plug-in hybrid police car since none have been created yet.

The city hopes to complete the switch by 2025.
