CHARLEVOIX — It’s no secret that many people enjoy coming to Charlevoix.

As of this week, visitors to the city’s downtown who drive electric cars, can now also get a charge out of the experience.

Earlier this year, as part of improvements made to the White Parking Lot (located on the south side of Clinton Street just east of Harbor Health and Fitness), the city installed an electric vehicle charging station where folks who drive vehicles, such as a Chevy Volt can charge their vehicles while they patronize businesses in the downtown.

The move, Charlevoix City Manger Rob Straebel said, makes Charlevoix one of the first cities in Northern Michigan to offer such an amenity. He said the closest such units he knows of are in Traverse City.

At its Dec. 3 regular semi-monthly meeting, the Charlevoix City Council took the final step to make the station operational — approving the acceptance of credit card payment at the device.
