Berkeley Lab picked for $150 million battery center team

Lawrence Berkeley Lab was chosen as part of a team that will establish a battery and energy storage research center, backed by up to $120 million in federal funds over the next five years.

The Joint Center for Energy Storage Research battery effort will be spearheaded by scientists at Argonne National Laboratory and will combine research and knowledge of five national laboratories, five universities and four private firms. The aim of the center is to achieve breakthrough levels of battery performance.

The new center was announced Friday by Energy Secretary Steve Chu, who was formerly the director of Lawrence Berkeley Lab. He was joined by by Illinois’ Sen. Dick Durbin and Gov. Pat Quinn, and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
