USA: No parking: City-owned charging stations for electric vehicles only

Don’t park your gas guzzler in front of a city-owned electric charging station.

The city of Knoxville can now tow your ride.

A new ordinance, approved by City Council Tuesday in its regular meeting, says that only electric vehicles can use the 24 city-owned parking spots with car chargers.

“It’s the same concept as having disabled parking,” said Susanna Sutherland, the city’s sustainability manager. “You have to have the ordinance to tow or ticket.”

The new rule caps the first step in growing the electric vehicle grid in the city.

“I ran on the vision of promoting Knoxville as greener,” Mayor Madeline Rogero said, “and it’s important that we make some spaces available.”

Of course, it’s not only nonelectric vehicles that can be penalized.

“What if we have some bad boy electric vehicle owner that pulls up (and parks his car there all day)?” Councilman Nick Della Volpe asked Sutherland.

“We will have the ability to remove those vehicles,” Sutherland said.

The charging stations have been installed as a part of a federal project.
