USA: $4.5 million awarded for lithium battery research by Johnson Controls, PolyPlus

A Silicon Valley battery developer and Johnson Controls Inc. will team up to develop a water-based lithium-sulfur battery, the U.S. Energy Department announced.

PolyPlus Battery Co. of Berkeley, Calif., and Johnson Controls were awarded $4.5 million from the Advanced Research Projects-Energy, which announced funding for projects in 24 states this week.

The water-based lithium-sulfur batteries are lightweight batteries with considerable energy density, according to the agency.

“New features in these water-based batteries make PolyPlus’s unique, lightweight battery ideal for a variety of military and consumer applications,” the agency said. “If successful, this technology would be able to transition to a widespread commercial and military market.”
