TN No. 9 for electric-car sales, Edmunds reports

Tennessee is among the top 10 states for electric-car sales, reports.

Of all electric cars sold in the U.S. this year, 2.9 percent have been registered in Tennessee, ranking the Volunteer State No. 9 in the country. For comparison, Tennessee ranks No. 19 for overall new-car registrations, with 1.7 percent of all new cars registered in Tennessee this year.

According to a press release from, 3.4 percent of all new car registrations this year have been for either hybrid or electric vehicles, a full percentage point higher than the 2.4 percent rate for all of 2011.

Nissan became the first major automaker to release an all-electric vehicle in the U.S., the Leaf, which will be made at Nissan’s Smyrna plant beginning later this year
