L.A. Auto Show: Toyota focuses on batteries, wireless charging

LOS ANGELES – Toyota is working on next-generation batteries for its electric vehicles as well as wireless charging to eliminate the need for plugs, Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota Motor Sales, said today.

Lentz declined to provide a lot of detail but said the work is being done in-house and would not be on the road in the near future.

“It is not important to be first, but to be best,” he said of new battery technology that is being pursued by the industry as a whole.

Toyota is a hybrid leader – the vehicles account for 14% of its lineup compared with the industry, which has 3.4% hybrids.

Hybrids will remain core to the Toyota lineup, he said in comments to open the Los Angeles auto show.
