Hillsboro’s transportation hubs concept a finalist for $5M prize

Hillsboro announced Monday it is one of 20 finalists cities selected to compete for a $5 million prize with its idea to create transportation hubs throughout the city to better connect commuters with sustainable transportation options.

Hillsboro’s proposal was plucked for the finalist round from some 300 ideas submitted for the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge, a competition designed to spur ideas to solve problems with city living.

The competition is run by Michael Bloomberg’s Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge.

A team from Hillsboro will attend Bloomberg Ideas Camp, a two-day gathering in New York City, to work with experts on further refining the concept for final submission. Winners will be announced in spring 2013, with a total of $9 million — including the $5 million grand prize — going to five cities to help finance the implementation of their ideas.

Hillsboro got the nod for its “GoPoint” platform which would allow citizens to use alternative travel modes such as bike sharing, car and ride sharing, hourly rental cars or vanpools. The idea is to fill in where public transportation fall short and connect workers with workplaces.

“GoPoint Hillsboro is a bold idea because it seamlessly integrates travel hubs with web, mobile and onsite applications to offer individualized travel options,” said Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Wiley in a press release. “The GoPoint system will provide travelers with real-time information available for trips to, from and within the city based on a coordinated system of hub origin, destination points and transportation options.”
