GM focusing on plug-in EVs, not hybrids

Automaker wants 500K EVs on road by 2017

General Motors announced November 14 they’d be focusing future electric powertrain research on plug-in hybrids and pure EVs, as opposed to traditional hybrids.

The automaker wants to sell around 500,000 electric vehicles annually by 2017, senior vice-president global product development Mary Barra said in a statement.

That’s roughly six percent of the nine million vehicles they sold globally in 2011, Automotive News reports.

While General Motors had previously tried to cover their bases by working on a variety of different powertrain solutions, they say they now intend to hone in on plug-in hybrid development.
