Europe: Solar charging stations to be installed in ports

Three solar charging stations to be powered directly by sunlight and used to charge electric vehicles will be installed in port areas in Malta.

Forming part of a €2.5 million project, Transport Malta has announced that it will purchase eight electric vehicles, cover Malta Transport Centre with photovoltaic panels and engage in an in-depth study into the possibility of utilising greener means of energy instead of the heavy fuel oil currently used to power vessels berthed at the Valletta Grand Harbour. The project, Port-PVEV, aims at reducing port operations’ dependency on non-renewable sources of energy by introducing clean sources to power port areas.

The project, led by the Transport Malta with the collaboration of the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, the Catania Port Authority and the Province of Caltanissetta, is co-financed by the European Union – European Regional Development Fund with a budgetary allocation of € 2,125,000 from the Operational Programme Italy-Malta 2007-2013.

The Italy-Malta 2007-2013 Cross-Border Cooperation Programme is coordinated by the Territorial Cooperation Unit within the Funds and Programmes Division at the Office of the Prime Minister.
