Argonne chosen as Energy Dept. hub for advancing electric car batteries

Argonne National Laboratory has been selected as the site of a new battery research center — a designation that ultimately could bring as much as $120 million in federal funding to develop better power sources for hybrid and electric vehicles, a source confirmed Thursday.

Crain’s Chicago Business first reported the selection on its website Thursday.

The U.S. Energy Department earlier this year announced plans to create an Energy Innovation Hub to research improved batteries and electrical storage for a variety of uses, including powering electric vehicles.

Argonne, located in southwest suburban Lemont, was one of a number of laboratories, universities and other research facilities around the country that competed for the center, which already is scheduled to receive about $20 million in federal funds its first year.
