USA: Tesla, Zero Motorcycles, others receive millions in funding from California Energy Commission

The California Energy Commission awarded more than $20 million for clean transportation projects statewide, and a number of the recipients are valley-based.

Tesla Motors Inc. will get $10 million for equipment to produce its new SUV/crossover vehicle, called the Tesla Model X, in Fremont. Palo Alto-based Tesla said it will provide $50.2 million in match funding for the vehicle’s production.

The Bay Area Quality Management District also received funding, $3 million for its Bay Area “eTaxi” program. The district is working with Palo Alto-based Better Place Mobility Services Inc. on a project that uses six battery electric taxis at Mineta San Jose International Airport and San Francisco International Airport and collects data on their operation.

And Scotts Valley-based Zero Motorcycles has landed $1.8 million to expand its electric motorcycle production. The company plans to quadruple its production capacity, as well as develop new prototypes.
