USA: South Sioux City gets free charging station for electric car

SOUTH SIOUX CITY | Members of the South Sioux City City Council took the city’s new electric car for a spin before Monday’s meeting. The car will use a new charging station that the city was awarded cost-free.

South Sioux is the first city in Nebraska to get a free station from ChargePoint, a Campbell, Calif.-based network of charging stations that ran a two-week promotion offering the free stations.

With an 8-0 vote, the council approved a three-year lease on the car, a Nissan Leaf, from Billion Automotive of Sioux City.

Lance Hedquist, South Sioux city administrator, estimated the car would save the city about $1,400 a year on gasoline. The charging dock uses power from the electrical grid and will be installed outside City Hall.

“We need to look for ways to reduce our dependency on foreign oil, and this is one way to do that,” he said.

The station will be open to the public.
