USA: Solana Beach revises commuter incentive program

SOLANA BEACH — Solana Beach city employees who drive plug-in hybrids and other zero-emission cars to work are now included in the city’s incentive based employee commuter program.

The City Council revised its 2008 commuter program policy this month to include incentives for zero emission vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The revisions do not include standard gas or electric hybrids, partial zero emission vehicles, or ultra low and super ultra low emission vehicles.

The revisions help the city achieve its goal of improving air quality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil fuel burning vehicles.

The council adopted the policy in January 2008 to promote the use of alternative forms of transportation for employees to get to work, such as biking, walking, carpooling or taking the bus or train in order to improve air quality, help reduce peak hour traffic congestion and lower energy consumption.
