USA: Q-C airport unveils electric vehicle charging stations

The Quad-City International Airport unveiled two new charging units for electric vehicles during a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning.

The pair of units, which have been installed in the short-term parking lot, will allow airport passengers, employees and visitors to charge electric vehicles, or EV, in four to six hours. The charging equipment is the result of a partnership between the airport and Delta Institute, a Chicago-based nonprofit environmental and economic development organization. The partnership was initiated by the Quad-Cities Chamber of Commerce.

“We are pleased to be one of the first public facilities in the region to offer EV charging service to those customers who have an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle,” said Bruce Carter, the airport’s aviation director.

Genesis Health System also is participating in the project and plans to install two of the same units at its new medical center building built on a former brownfields site at 41st Street in Moline.

The installation was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Delta Institute purchased four Dual EV Charging Units from Eaton Corp. The institute has worked with the chamber to identify potential partners and sites in the Quad-Cities.
