USA: Car charging stations could come to city

Those hoping to recharge their batteries in downtown Dahlonega may soon be in luck.

City council members are looking to plug in to the growing number of drivers traveling by electric or hybrid vehicle with the possible addition of a pair of charging stations to the downtown district.

“I think this really shows a lot of forward thinking on the part of the community,” said City Manager Bill Lewis at a meeting earlier this month.

If approved, those stations would be provided by Ecotality, a San Francisco based business that recently received a grant from the U.S. Energy Department to assist in the research of alternative fuel vehicles.

“They partner with cities and offer to pay $1,000 per unit,” said Downtown Development Authority project coordinator Rebecca Shirley.

That means a unit that would normally cost $2,500 would be available to the city for $1,500.

Shirley said this could put Dahlonega on the forefront of a soon-to-be growing eco-friendly tourism trend.

“There’s really nothing like this in Georgia,” she said. “Atlanta has two and Clayton will soon have four.”

The idea received a warm reception from city council members.
