Singapore: Govt to draft EV masterplan by end-2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 (Bernama) — The government will be ready to draft the masterplan for the mass usage of electric vehicles (EV) in Malaysia by the end of 2013, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui said.

He said at present, the government is compiling a whole range of data, derived from the different car makers involved in the electric vehicle pilot programmes, in the country.

He said the ministry, through the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation, will continue to engage with electric car makers to compile sufficient data before the government announces the EV as a common mode of transportation in Malaysia.

“We do not want people to complain after buying a commercial EV that there is an insufficient charging station infrastructure.

“So we are collecting data from all EV manufacturers who have established charging stations for their respective pilot programmes,” Chin added.

He was speaking to reporters after launching the first two public EV charging stations by Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd, on the sidelines of the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference (IGEM) 2012, here today.

The stations will be situated at Suria KLCC and Lot 10, in Bukit Bintang. Chin said the current collaboration between the government and Proton Holdings Bhd on an EV pilot programme, will take another year to yield productive data.

He added that the main issue to be addressed by the government before introducing the EV as a alternative type of transportation, is the cost of installing charging stations, linkages and maintenance.
