Porsche Sport Turismo: Plug-in hybrid packs an MPG punch

At the 2012 Paris Motor Show, Porsche introduced its Panamera Sport Turismo concept.

The beautiful luxury car is a plug-in hybrid. I know most of you are probably thinking a Porsche hybrid might increase its gas mileage all the way up to about 8 miles per gallon. But that is not the case.

The Panamera Sport Turismo Concept is a parallel hybrid, according to Yahoo! Autos. Its wheels can be driven by the electric motors, the gas engine, or both at the same time. When they operate together, the Turismo hybrid achieves 416 horsepower, and it accelerates to 62 miles per hour in under six seconds.

Porsche claims to reach 67 miles per gallon on the European Cycle. The hybrid’s engine can drive the wheels or charge the battery where necessary, or both.

Engadget reports that a battery pack sits in the car’s rear hatch and can be seen through a glass panel that can be turned clear by hitting a button. If you fully charge the hybrid, you can drive about 19 miles with just the 95 horsepower electric engine.
