Northampton electric vehicle charging stations go online

NORTHAMPTON – Riding the crest of the wave of the future, Northampton has opened five charging stations for electric vehicles and is making them available to owners for free.

Two charging stations on Crafts Avenue, two more at the fire station on Carlon Drive and another in the E. John Gare Parking Garage were turned on Monday. The parking garage actually has two charging stations, but one is not yet online because of communication problems with an off-site data center, according to Energy and Sustainability Director Chris Mason.

In all, Northampton will offer eight charging stations. The final two will be installed in the new parking garage at the police station on Center Street, which is under construction.

There are some all-electric vehicles now on the market as well as hybrids that use both electric power and gasoline. Mason said he does not know how many such vehicles there are in Northampton but has gotten eight telephone inquires about the charging stations in the past few weeks. City officials believe electric cars will become more popular, however.
