GM Australia op mulling electric car plan: report

GM Holden is considering plans to assemble 126 electric-powered Holdens at its Adelaide factory in what could be the biggest run of electric cars ever made, The Australian Financial Review reported Tuesday.

General Motors Co. GM +1.49% -owned Holden is in negotiations with the Australia’s federal government and the EV Engineering consortium chaired by former Mitsubishi chief Rob McEniry over a 70 million Australian dollar (US$73 million) plan that could lead to mass production of the vehicles.

Analysts said taxpayers may end up funding around A$15 million of the e-Holden expansion plan, which would include manufacturing 120 e-Commodores and six left-hand drive e-Caprices, the newspaper reported without saying where it got the information.

A spokeswoman for Holden said the carmaker is continuing to review possible steps in its plans with the government, but had “no announcement to make” regarding this report.
