Australia: Mitsubishi plug-in to undercut Volt

New Outlander will be the first plug-in hybrid SUV in Australia when it arrives next year.

Mitsubishi Australia has vowed to price its new plug-in hybrid Outlander SUV cheaper than the Holden Volt; which uses similar technology. The Japanese company unveiled the new mid-size SUV at the Sydney motor show today.

Officially known as the Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) the car uses the electric drivetrain from the i-MiEV city car for the majority of its running, but can have its range extended to 880km thanks to a 2.0-litre petrol engine that works in tandem with the electric motor and batteries.

“Monday to Friday you don’t have to do any refuelling, just plug it in for four hours,” said Mitsubishi Australia president Mutsuhiro Oshikiri.

Although the final price of the car is still being decided ahead of its launch in the middle of 2013, Oshikiri vowed to make it the most affordable plug-in hybrid by offering it for less than the $59,990 Holden charges for the Volt.
