USA: Tesla rolls out new service center in Fremont, other locations

Tesla Motors Inc. is charging up its nationwide service network, nearly tripling the number of garages as the electric car company seeks to put more facilities within easy reach of customers.

The Palo Alto-based company (NASDAQ:TSLA) recently launched a Fremont service center near its factory at 45500 Fremont Blvd. It already has a service center in Menlo Park at 300 El Camino Real.

Next up: San Rafael, where Tesla has leased 8,000 square feet at 470 DuBois St., according to the Marin Independent Journal. That facility will be open by March. In all, 19 new service centers are planned across North America, from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Tampa, the company said Monday.

The locations aren’t being decided willy-nilly, spokeswoman Shanna Hendriks said.

“Our goal is to put service centers where we have customers,” she said, adding that Tesla has 12,000 reservations for the all-electric Model S, which ranges from $49,900 to $97,900 after a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Joost de Vries, vice president of global service for Tesla, wrote in a blog post on Monday that 90 percent of current Model S reservation holders will be within 100 miles of a service center by March, and 80 percent will be within 50 miles. The Model S can go approximately 160 to 300 miles between charges, depending on the battery option.

“When it comes to servicing your Model S, we are making convenience a priority,” he wrote.

De Vries also detailed North American service pricing, which relies on a subscription plans that cover annual inspections and all wear and tear — except for tires.

Customers will pay $600 a year, or can purchase a four-year, pre-paid service plan for $1,900.

Stuck in the middle of Manitoba? No problem, Hendriks said. For $2,400, the four-year “Anywhere Plan” includes unlimited “Tesla Ranger” service, which sends out trained technicians — called Rangers — anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.
