USA: Marin Voice: Marin is ready to celebrate electric cars

ALONG with more than 60 other cities around the nation, Marin will celebrate National Plug In Day on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marin Center parking lot adjacent to the farmers market.

Plug-in cars will be on display and test drives will be offered.

Electric cars are back!

During the early 1900s, there were more electric cars in the United States than gasoline cars. But at that time very few homes had electricity and gasoline cars became predominate.

Now we have a nationwide electric grid and there are outlets everywhere. After a false start for the return of electric cars at the very end of the 1900s, many auto makers are offering a plug-in model in their current lineup and more have been announced for the 2014 models.

Thousands of plug-in cars are on the roads in California. There are even two manufacturing plants producing electric cars in the Bay Area.

You don’t need to be an expert at recognizing car models to notice the electric cars on the road — just look for the drivers who are grinning because of the fun they are having driving electric.

Cars have become computers on wheels that happen to have comfortable seats, climate controls, entertainment systems, and Internet connections, so why not power them with clean, quiet, economical electricity just like other modern appliances?
