Chevy Volt Stalling Hit Component Supplier Polypore

General Motors’ (GM) coming idling of a production line for its plug-in electric Chevy Volt is rippling through to suppliers, including battery component maker Polypore International (PPO).

Sales of other electrics, including the promising Nissan (NSANY) Leaf, look to be sputtering slightly.

The maker of porous membranes used in medical equipment and battery systems said back-half profits are likely to be at or below first-half earnings. The company based that on weakness in July and August, and the expected four-week shutdown starting this month of the innovative but pricey Volt.

It guided for earnings of mid-30-cents per share, in a statement released a day before its investor day. Analysts were expecting 50 cents EPS for the quarter. The company said September sales had rebounded, and it expected the start of U.S. production of the all-electric Leaf in the U.S. later this year to help.
