ACT adds electric car charging stations

Iowa City’s ACT has taken another step toward sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of its 340-acre campus.

ACT officials gathered Wednesday outside the Davidsen Building as CEO Jon Whitmore, Iowa Sen. Rob Hogg, D-Cedar Rapids, and Iowa Rep. Tyler Olson, D-Cedar Rapids, cut the green ribbon wrapped around three new electric vehicle charging stations.

The three stations, solar array and infrastructure cost about $24,000 — the cost of which will be decreased by MidAmerican Energy rebates, said Deb Smilski, ACT assistant vice president of central services and sustainability.

The charging stations are powered by a nearby 14-panel solar grid that will generate about 4,000 kilowatt hours each year, said Brad Duggan, Van Meter renewable energy project manager.
