USA: Will the new Ford C-Max become the new hybrid king?

As Ford has announced competition beating performance and efficiency metrics for their new C-Max Hybrid utility this week, there is no doubt the company is on a mission to unseat Toyota as the assumed emperor of the hybrid car realm.

While the Blue Oval itself used Toyota’s own Hybrid Synergy Drive technology in its cars under license for the first few years, they have learned, designed and will now build their own drive systems starting this summer.

The new Ford C-Max Hybrid and Energi plug-in hybrid people mover has the potential to become the next “Baby Jesus” of the enviro-car world if it actually works as advertised. With its new patents and technology, it is poised to exceed all of its peers in miles per gallon, MPGe’s, electric-only range and speed, as well as cargo capacity.

The C-Max Hybrid just received its official EPA ratings which come to an astounding 47 mpg city, highway and combined. Given the SUV-like size and utility of the new C-Max which is about the size and profile of a small minivan, this is an astounding achievement.

Add to those numbers the fact that Ford’s new hybrid drive system can power the C-Max in electric-only (EV) mode at speeds up to 62 mpg and you have a strong contender. The C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid variant with is larger battery capacity can travel up to 85 mph in EV mode, a new benchmark in the arena.

And when you listen to Ford, you get no doubt that they are taking Toyota’s Prius v on with all guns. They point out that the new C-Max outperforms the Prius v in every category from size, price, efficiency, and performance.
