BYD E6 Batteries Did Not Explode in 180kph Crash: Short Circuit + Flammable Interior Materials Blamed

5.26, or rather May 26th Crash, became a hot topic in the Chinese market two months ago when a Nissan GTR crashed into the back of a BYD E6 Taxi at high speed. The accident occurred on Shenzhen’s Binhai Avenue at 2am in the morning, the GTR driver was drunk at the wheel when he plowed into the back of the E6 at 180kph, which resulted in a fire and the death of the taxi driver and his two female passengers. The GTR driver fled the scene only to be caught two hours later by the Police who reported he smelled strongly of alcohol, the GTR driver has since been arrested and is pending a criminal inquiry, compensation has already been paid to those who were hurt during the crash.

BYD announced on May 29th that the company’s products were up to standards set by the Chinese government, and would move to investigate the crash ASAP. At the time it was heavily rumored that the batteries exploded which caused the fire
