Canada: Ontario Entices EV Buyers With Charging Stations

TORONTO, Ontario, Canada, August 14, 2012 (ENS) – The Ontario government is investing C$80 million to jump-start the widespread availability of electric car charging stations to make EVs more attractive to potential buyers.

Premier Dalton McGuinty Thursday announced the new fund to spur the development and investment in charging stations as he plugged in an electric car at the Powerstream utility in Markham, just north of Toronto.

“We’re taking the next step to ensure car charging stations are in the right place to power the next generation of vehicles,” McGuinty said.

“Just as we worked hard to become North America’s number one producer of cars, we’re working hard to become number one in North America when it comes to clean energy. Today’s announcement takes us one step closer to our vision.”

The McGuinty Government, together with Infrastructure Ontario, will encourage public and private sectors to come forward with proposals to build, test and expand the availability of recharging facilities.
