Bright spark becomes an ambassador in electric car roll out

The grandfather and semi-retired electrician from Moycullen, Co Galway, converted a conventional car into an electric vehicle over 30 years ago. Yesterday he was unveiled as one of 21 ‘ecar’ ambassadors who will take part in a free trial of electric cars over the coming year.

In 1980, Ireland was in the midst of a fuel crisis when Mr Clancy and a friend made what is believed to be one of the first electric vehicles in the country. They estimated it cost just one penny a mile to run.

The 66-year-old now believes the new Mitsubishi iMiEV car he will be driving will match his own 1980 model at just one cent a mile to run.

He and his now deceased friend Sean Walsh spent just a few months in 1980 converting a normal car to make it completely electric-powered.

“It was a Volvo Daf car and we took the engine and the transmission all out and fitted in an electric motor and battery. It was charged at night and had a top speed of 30mph and a range of 25 to 30 miles.
