USA: White House to honor CSU professor for electric vehicle battery

The White House on Monday recognized CSU chemistry professor Amy Prieto for her work on a battery that the university said could “revolutionize” the hybrid and electric vehicle industry.

Prieto, an associate professor, will receive a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers at a White House ceremony at the end of the month. She is one of 96 scientists to receive the honor and the only one from CSU this year.

The National Science Foundation nominated Prieto, who co-founded Prieto Battery Inc. Her company aims to commercialize a non-toxic, lithium ion battery as much as 1,000 times more powerful and lasting 10 times longer than traditional batteries.

“Discoveries in science and technology not only strengthen our economy, they inspire us as a people,” President Obama said in a White House statement. “The impressive accomplishments of today’s awardees so early in their careers promise even greater advances in the years ahead.”
