USA: Firefighters learn about hybrid, electric cars

Leavenworth, Kan. —
This week, Leavenworth firefighters are studying hybrid and electric cars. They’re not looking to purchase them. Instead they’re trying to learn how to safely deal with the vehicles when they respond to accidents or other calls.

Matt Chastain is teaching his fellow members of the Leavenworth Fire Department a course on hybrid and electric vehicle safety.

“They are outside the norm of what we deal with on a daily basis,” he said.

But the numbers of these vehicles are expected to grow and dealing with them will become part of the normal way of life for firefighters, according to Assistant Fire Chief Mike Lingenfelser.

He likened to the situation to when firefighters first started learning to deal with hazardous materials.

Chastain said hybrid and electrical cars pose a challenge because of the high level of electricity involved.
