USA: Council approves public charging stations

LIHU‘E — Without much discussion, the Kaua‘i County Council unanimously approved a bill last week that will allow the owners of the 20 or so electric vehicles registered on the island to use the county-owned charging stations in Lihu‘e at a rate of $2 per hour.
The bill also will provide the administration with information to better understand how to manage billing and other issues.
The bill requires the county Office of Economic Development to provide a written report to the council, evaluating the electric-vehicle charging station program in six months. The bill originally proposed to give free electricity to owners of electric vehicles for six months, but a few community members strongly opposed this provision, prompting council members to add a charge of $2 per hour for users
