Renault, LG Chem will make next-gen batteries in 2017; Zoe has software glitch

We already knew that the Renault-Nissan alliance is willing to invest over $5 billion in electric vehicles. Details on how all that money will be spent has been trickling out, and today’s announcement is one more piece of the pie.

Renault said it will partner with LG Chem to develop “a EV electrics industry in France,” which in effect means the two companies (along with CEA, the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) will work on next-gen lithium-ion batteries. The automaker and LG Chem will also build a battery factory in France that will make “current-generation batteries from the end of 2015 and, from early 2017, the new-generation batteries resulting from the agreement between Renault, CEA and LG Chem.” The French government has also announced it will increase incentives for electric vehicles and hybrid cars, Automotive News reports. All-electric vehicles will become eligible for a 7,000-euro cash incentive, up from 5,000.
