A group of four electric vehicles quietly pulled in front of the Hotel Grand Pacific Wednesday, wrapping up a two-day road trip around Vancouver Island to showcase a new network of 18 high-powered charging stations.

Sun Country Highway, of Saskatoon, Sask., was spurred to work with other private sector partners to install the stations now that B.C. has created a $2.74 million community charging infrastructure fund. Announced this year, the province’s goal is to see more than 500 charging stations in the province by the end of next March.

“We think it is a great opportunity,” said Rob MacGregor, regional director of Sun Country.

The charging stations were installed in 12 communities, including Port Hardy, Port McNeill and Port Alberni. Tofino received four stations, making it a leader in the field, MacGregor said. The overall value of the project was about $20,000.

Establishing charging stations will help foster production of electric vehicles, said MacGregor, who talks about province-wide and cross-country charging networks. Sun Country, established this year, has installed about 100 charging systems.
